Oranges are actually classified into two general categories ;
the sweet ones and the bitter ones!
Logically the sweet ones are most commonly consumed while the bitter ones are oftenly used to make jam or marmalade and their zest serves as the flavoring for liqueurs
such as Grand Marnier and Cointreau.

The bitter oranges are also much more aromatic than the rest of the oranges varieties! Thus, almost all parts of bitter orange are used to produce beautiful and aromatic materials for the fragrance industry.

Orange-Blossom-Fragrance-Oil.jpg

From the peel of oranges, essential oil is derived while the delicate white flowers are served in production of Orange Blossoms absolute!
Being one of the most fragrant flowers, orange blossoms are an indispensible material in perfume industry.

Looking at the history of oranges, they originated thousands of years ago in Asia, in the region from southern China to Indonesia from which they spread to India then across the whole world!

Before the 20th century, oranges were very expensive and therefore they were not regularly consumed, but rather eaten on special holidays such as Christmas.

It is only with the arrival of efficient means of transportation that the price of oranges dropped, and they could be consumed on a wide scale, as they are today.

Brazil, USA, Mexico, China , Spain and Israel are some of the largest commercial producers of oranges in the world!

Now let's have a look at some of the world most famous orange varieties!
There are more than 600 varieties of oranges in the world!!!

NAVEL

Oranges come in many varieties, but the navel orange, is probably one of the most common. Easily identifiable from the outside by the navel-like circle at one end, these oranges also have additional, tiny wedges just inside the “navel.”

Navels are the most common variety of oranges in the U.S. and are sweet , seedless and have a thick skin!

BLOOD ORANGES

This is one of the tastiest members of the orange family!
With flesh that ranges in color from pink to brilliant red to burgundy; taste-wise,
Blood Oranges are tart-sweet and slightly berry-like.

Although some are grown in California, most blood oranges come from Mediterranean countries (Southern Italy in particular) and are often considered to be among the finest dessert oranges in the world.

VALENCIA

Best known as the orange juice oranges, Valencia are also great to eat too. They have thin skins, a few seeds, and are very juicy.
The Valencia’s were named after the Spanish city of Valencia when they were first introduced in California, and they remain an important citrus crop in that state today.

HAMLIN

Blood oranges and the smell of orange blossoms.... One of the chefs at the Hotel Del Coronado used to court me, he created an orange blossom creme brûlée for me once, it was magical! He would host various different coursed meals for me... le sigh...

I would court you too if you were in Mauritius! Hahahah! You really drove him crazy that he created such an amazing dessert for you! Wow!
The smell of Orange Blossoms is really magical, I use quite a lot in my cooking! I love it mixed with beetroot too! Just amazing!

And you sir just made me blush :)
If I was in Mauritius I might not be responsible for my actions haha
It indeed was a delectable desert, he himself is a very talented chef, one of the best in California but his artistic mental state left little to anything haha But I so appreciated his attentions.
Beetroot is one of my favorite roots. I love it with fresh lime and coarse salt (strange but delicious I promise haha)

I love beetroot like that too! I used to make beetroot carpaccio with lime and olive oil! Just amazing!

Carpaccio? Omg that is amazing I love it!

Oh yes, carpaccio, either cooked or raw, both are just awesome!

I put orange juice in a smoothie every morning. My favorite fruit:))

Oh yes Orange is just the best to have every morning @yoshiko! It keeps you well!
