๐Ÿ˜ป Greek Night - Greek Salad, Tzatziki and Spicy Hanger Steak Strips Pita ๐Ÿ˜ป

This is the first time I've posted an entire meal and all its components in one post. Usually I break it up into a few posts, but I thought that it would be easier to reference the recipes all in one go. It may be a bit longer than usual, so let me know your thoughts on the longer format

This is an easy week night dinner, with not so much prep involved.

Grilled spicy steak, caramelized onion with a refreshing Greek salad and the best Tzatziki you will ever eat. I was inspired to make this after I bought hanger steak for the first time. Hanger steak is a thick strip of meat from the underside of the cow. It hangs (hence the name) between the rib and the loin and is part of the diaphragm. A tasty piece of meat, that can be tough and chewy if not cooked correctly. But don't be scared - my instructions are easy and quick!

INGREDIENTS

Greek Salad

  • 1 punnet baby tomatoes, chopped in half
  • half a cucumber, diced
  • cup olives, sliced or torn into pieces
  • two rounds feta cheese, crumbled
  • sundried tomatoes, chopped in chunky pieces
  • few basil leaves, chopped finely

Tzatziki

  • half a cucumber
  • 500g greek yoghurt
  • two cloves garlic, grated, and chopped very finely
  • few sprigs of mint, copped finely
  • a bunch of dill, chopped finely
  • 2 tblsp olive oil
  • 1 lemon

Spiced Steak

  • 1 x 600gr hanger steak, dry aged (try to get one that has been aged in a dry rub, with some hot spices)
  • 1 onion, sliced into halves
  • 2 peppers
  • a few spring onions, finely chopped
  • some pitas to serve
  • hummus to serve

METHOD

Greek Salad

Combine the chopped vegetables (yes I know tomato is a fruit ๐Ÿ˜…) in a small bowl. Add in the chopped basil and olives, and crumble the feta over everything. Do a taste check, and add any salt if needed. Dress with a little olive oil and lemon juice, and refrigerate until needed

Tzatziki

This is my third version of Tzatziki, and I think I am finally happy with the outcome. I read online how important it is to salt the cucumber to extract any extra liquid, and this is the key to making great tzatziki

Slice the cucumber in half, and scoop out all the seeds. The seeds hold the most water in the entire vegetable, so we won't be needing them. Grate the rest of the cucumber into a sieve, and add quite a lot of salt. Stir in the salt, and leave the cucumber to drain for at least a few hours. You can also use a spatula to press out even more liquid.

Add your very finely chopped garlic to your olive oil in a small bowl, and leave to perfume the oil.

Once the cucumber has been rid of most of the liquid, you can dry it off with a paper towel. Add the cucumber and garlicky olive oil to your yoghurt, and stir in the finely chopped dill and mint.

Finish off with a touch of salt, and a squeeze of lemon. You can refrigerate this as well.

Spiced Steak

I bought my steak pre-spiced. If you are unable to find one, I would recommend doing a dry rub of smoked paprika, black pepper, dried chilli flakes and lots of salt.

To start, put your peppers into the oven whole, and roast at a medium heat, until blackened. If you have a gas oven, you can just turn up the gas and blacken them on the flames.

In the meantime, turn up your hot plate to a medium heat, and add a small knob of butter. Let it melt, and softly and slowly fry your onions, along with the spring onions, until almost caramelized. It's important to salt them to enable the process of the caramelization.

Once this is done, scoop them to the side of the pan, and turn the heat up. Add a dash of olive oil, and fry your steak to your liking. Since our steak was dry aged, and a very thick cut of meat, I fried each side for about four minutes, resulting in a medium rare sear.

Slice up your peppers, and lay them out next to your onions. Slice up your deliciously charred steak into thin slivers, and arrange alongside your onions and peppers.

Serve with the warmed pitas, your tzatziki, Greek salad and hummus, and you're good to go. I like to lay this all out on a board and let my guests build their own pitas.
