i will not remain hungry in Holland

in #food6 years ago (edited)

he first time I left the hotel on the streets of Amsterdam, I noticed a huge sign "FEBO" and a glass display case with a bunch of small compartments behind the glass which were exposed to various "delicacies" of Dutch fast food. I immediately remembered my student years and my favorite canteen in MPEI, which I often ran to have a bite when I came to visit friends. You come to such a machine, throw coins and press the right window - that's the whole cunning of self-service in such fast food. And since I remembered the student years, then from all the offered assortment, I did not hesitate to choose pies with a look absolutely exactly similar to those that once "regaled" without thinking about their own health. In Holland they are called "kroket". These fried in breading meat rolls were surprisingly delicious! As it turned out, they are mainly made from beef and veal, but there are even shrimp and chicken. I did not try the latter.

Remembering the taste of croquettes, I decided that this publication will be dedicated entirely to fast, varied and tasty Dutch food!

What is this sea power, if the assortment of its fast food does not have fish dishes! The Dutch adore herring, and make sandwiches with it: they cut a white bun and put herring and pickled cucumbers into it! All this pleasure is called "broodje harring". It is supposed to take the herring by the tail, and bite it, throwing back his head and eating a bun with cucumbers. And it's really tasty! I tried it in Amsterdam in small snack bars and other seaside towns, but everywhere the taste was at the height, although different due to the small spices, the taste of cucumbers and the addition of lettuce leaves.

But the second fish "street" dish - this is my clear choice and a hit among other snacks. I generally like fish, and deep-fried freshly caught cod is just a fish gourmet dream! Juicy, soft, puffy with heat, slightly burning and so airy-fragrant that I never stopped for one portion and always ordered the second. "Kibbeling", the name of this dish, is usually served with garlic sauce or with mayonnaise, but for my taste the sauce only discourages the taste of the fish!

It is impossible to bypass the traditional Dutch dish "stamppot". The plate is laid with mashed potatoes, mixed with various ingredients. This can be onions, cabbage, cabbage, carrots, spinach, and for sure something else, whose taste I just did not understand. In addition to mashed potatoes are put roasted sausage or sausage. You can ask yourself to add some sauce, or mustard, but it's more for tourists, because the Dutch themselves usually do not. Very satisfying and after such a dish you do not think about food for a long time.

Well, at last one more meat snack - "bitterballen". These are fried in breading meat balls, which are usually served in any cafe for beer. You click them like seeds, or boiled shrimp, so the plate is constantly changed.

To crown this set of street food is probably one more dish - this is French fries. It is sold everywhere, poured into raznichalernye kulechki, poured with the chosen sauce and solemnly hand over a plastic disposable fork. Do you think that this is ordinary potatoes, like McDonald's? Nothing like this! Once you try it, and you understand that this is a completely different taste, consistency, aroma and pleasure. So I advise you definitely.

It's probably time to move on to the sweet. Here, too, a fairly extensive range. Firstly, it is the famous Dutch waffles "stroopwafel". They are completely different from Belgian! Thin, with sweet honey, or caramel syrup inside, fragrant and slightly viscous. They are good with coffee.

"Poffertjes" - I would call them fritters. But the difference is that they are directly aerial and they are made from buckwheat flour. And served with either powdered sugar, or with some syrup, and sometimes even with strawberries and whipped cream.

And one day I could not resist seeing the real donuts! I could not pass by and ordered myself a serving. Indeed, in appearance these are ordinary donuts, with the only difference being that they have candied fruit inside. This dish is called Dutch "oliebollen". The truth is for some reason it is considered New Year's and you will only try it if you come to Holland in December, although this is not the best time to travel to this country.

And two more delicacies, which are considered originally Dutch, but which did not impress me at all - are licorice sweets and sweet powder, which the Dutch sprinkle, I think, everything - ice cream, cakes, muffins, the same fritters and even sandwiches with oil! Liquorice I got salty and not tasty, and an anise powder. After their tasting, I never returned to these "delicacies".

Strictly speaking, everything. You will not remain hungry in Holland, even if you do not know any language. By the way, the Dutch are fluent in English and German - these are the compulsory subjects in the school and the knowledge of these languages is very high among the entire indigenous population.

Beyond the brackets I left cheese, which in Holland is the most popular product, but I thought it was blasphemy to insert the story about him into this post and decided that this king of Holland should devote a separate publication!
