Harvard Health Report: All about healthy and unhealthy food

Dear Reader, dear reader

Healthy eating is easier than ever before. This is because we know much more about the nature of a healthy diet than before. Choosing healthy foods based on science remains the best way to reduce your chances of developing heart and diabetes, as well as helping you avoid high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and some forms of cancer.

We have known for years that some foods drive health forward - especially fruits and vegetables, some oils and fats, and we all know the benefits of whole grains. But nutrition science now shows that there is no single "healthy diet". Instead, there are many patterns of eating around the world that support good health. But they share some things: lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats from fish and plant sources; low amounts of salt, and little added sugar and solid fat. Healthy eating pattern also includes enough energy (calories) to nourish the body, but not more than necessary leading to weight gain.

In 2011, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) jointly issued the New Food Guidelines for Americans. These guidelines emphasize reducing caloric intake and increasing physical activity to control the growing prevalence of obesity, which contributes to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers. The guidelines, detailed in this report, urge people to choose "dense nutrients", such as vegetables, and avoid empty calorie foods, such as sugary sweets and refined white carbohydrates.

As a health nutritionist and ordinary citizen, I am convinced that eating more whole foods - unprocessed foods with few ingredients listed on the label, if the product is originally labeled at all - is not at all difficult. I know full-time people who have families and who, for example, make organic milk themselves because they are tired of paying high prices in the supermarket. It takes a bit of organization to get all the components and equipment, but in fact putting it all together takes only a few minutes. This is what the report will help you discover - that healthy eating is easier than you think. There are many ways to keep away from processed foods in the factory with fats, sugar, and salt.

This report provides the information you need to create a link between food and health. It will guide you in making healthy choices both at home and on the road. With Alna and Shifa!

Sincerely,

Teresa Fong, Sc.D., R.D., L.D.N.
