Macro Harvest

in #food9 years ago

Food takes up a great deal of our time and attention for very good reason, it's necessary for life! However, like many parts of our busy lives it is easy to over look the small details and rush onwards. So as the saying goes "Don't forget to stop and smell the roses", admonishing us to enjoy the small fleeting details of life, after all, they are a part of what makes life worth living. I can't push the wonderful scent of flowers through the internet but I can share some of the small details that make our world the wonderful place that it is. With that in mind, I turned my macro lens to the dinner table and the garden.

The centre of a purple cabbage stalk, often used as New Year's decorations in Japan.

The hydrophobic leaves have trapped some water drops at the centre point of the plant.
I'm not sure if it tastes like a regular cabbage, this variety usually isn't eaten but kept outdoors as a potted plant.

Blue berries! From the top of a cake, they are set on homemade raspberry/blueberry jam.

One of my favourite fruits, the perfect balance of sweet and tart. Thanks to greenhouses and international shipping they can be enjoyed year round, though out of season they can be rather expensive.

A wider angle shot cropped to a narrow panorama. It'd be a great banner if I had a dessert blog...

Last, a very small out of season strawberry:

While this one is potted, growing up we had a patch of wild strawberries, about the same size and extremely flavourful compared to the larger store bought strawberries. Perhaps it is because they are vine ripened; often strawberries and other fruits that you find in the supermarket are picked before they are ripe, this helps them keep longer but does alter the flavours, particularly strawberries and tomatoes.

I hope you enjoyed these small flavourful details of everyday life. While the majority of my macro photography subjects are dormant and missing during the winter, there are always small beautiful things to find in any season.

Perhaps, I'll take a trip to pick up some of the Little Monsters that we eat from the supermarket!

Wow, this is very beautiful!
