FREE ONIONS - FARMER´S GIVEAWAY

The farmers harvested the wheat 2 weeks ago and soon it´s harvest time for onions at the Marchfeld Kanal, which is just in the our vicinity. The photos posted here were from our past harvest.

We live in the border of Vienna and Lower Austria and since we are in the outskirts of the city , we are surrounded by these fields where farmers grow crops like wheat, corn, sugar beets, rapes , soy beans and many more. Year after year, we get so much of these onions from the fields near our home for free.

The tractors would set the onions free from the soil, gather them in rows, dry them for about a couple of weeks before they are being cleaned and delivered to the wholesalers in big crates.

When the farmers are done with their harvest and the tractors are out of the fields, we´re allowed to get the remaining ones that were not included in the harvester. It is expensive for the farmers to hire people to get the remaining onions, so they let the locals get them off the field before they start to till the soil to prepare the fields for the winter season.

Aside from the abundance of such harvest, I also get rosehips that I dry from the same area. I make tea out of them. Each berry is full of vitamins and could give relief to colds.

Lily enjoys being here and loves to smell the grass, wild trees and bushes as many dogs here do. We love to come and walk in this area because it is where nature is at its best and it´s away from the busy city. Here, we´ve got fresh air and plenty of greens.

My storage box for onions is hidden in a cool dark place to make them last longer. The dark place is necessary to prevent each piece from getting green shoots, thereby leading each onion to get spoiled!

My friends and I are now anxiously waiting to see the tractors roll on the fields and I do hope for a nice sunny weather when the time comes.
