Top 10 Must Try Food In Malaysia

As you know i'm a foodie. I love trying new food and travelling to new places. And here's my opinion on the top 10 must try food if you come to visit my beautiful country Malaysia.

10. Roti Canai (Flat Bread)

A common breakfast for the local because of its price and its really very tasty. If you are on a diet make sure to stay away from this due to high cholesterol and it's kind of oily as well. Due to its popularity, over the years there's more and more variety of roti canai, some with onions and eggs inside or even sardines. I personally like to dip my roti canai with some sugar. I like the natural taste of the bread without the curry.

9. Ice kacang (Frozen Ice Bean Desert)

This is a desert you can find anywhere in Malaysia due to our hot weather. Shaved ice top with pink syrup which taste like rose, red beans, corns and a lot of different types of jelly.

8. Cendol

This is another local favorite desert on a hot sunny day. The green worm like thing is made out of mung-bean flour and the green color are from a type of plant found in Malaysia called Pandan leaves. Ice are shaved and then with coconut milk. To finish it off, with some palm sugar and red beans.

7. Asam Laksa (Rice Noodles in Fish Soup)

The soup is packed with fish smell because it's made out of blended sardine fish. This is not for those who can't take spicy food. Its spicy and sour, top with slices of pineapples, onions and ginger flower. This dish is very popular in Penang which is a state in Malaysia.

6. Laksa (Curry Laksa)

Another Laksa? Yes and this is a different type of laksa found in Malaysia mainly found in the southern part. Due to its influence from Singapore. This laksa doesn't have the fishy taste but in fact its noodle in curry. The soup or the gravy is cooked with shrimp paste and coconut milk. Yes we do love our coconuts. Often top with sliced fish cakes, egg and cockles. I prefer this over the Asam laksa.

5. Char Kuey Teow (Stir-Fried Noodles)

This is usually a lunch or dinner favorite among the chinese. Most of the stalls will use pork oil to fried it to make it more fragrant and tasty. Usually very simple toppings like prawn and cockles. I would usually order mine with extra cockles because it just makes the taste better.

4. Satay (Grilled Meat On Skewers)

A simple yet flavorful dish. Meat (Chicken,Beef or Mutton) are sliced into chunks and marinated with some spices. Skewed on a bamboo stick until perfection. Served with gravy made out of peanuts and spices. A local favorite for dinner or supper.

3. Bak Kut Teh (Meat Bone Tea)

Despite the name this dish doesn't involve any tea in it. The only tea you have is when you eat this dish and they usually serve you chinese tea. The meat are cooked and simmered for a couple of hours until the meat are so tender it will literally fall off the bone when you take a bite. The soup is cooked with a bunch of traditional chinese herbs with garlic. This is usually eaten with rice.

2. Nasi Lemak (Fatty Rice)

No. 2 on my list is another local favorite for breakfast. Yes we do love our cholesterol in the morning because this as well is packed with fats, but not the fats from animals. The rice is cooked with pandan leaves (a type of leave found in Malaysia) and coconut milk. Usually served with eggs, peanuts and sambal. You have to try it with the sambal (a type of chilli mixed with other spices).

1. Chicken Rice

A simple and yet on my no.1 must try list. Can be found almost anywhere in Malaysia. We usually eat it for lunch or dinner. The chicken can be either boiled or roasted. The chicken are first poached in the water leaving fats of the chicken in the water, add with ginger, garlic,salt and pandan leaves producing a perfect rice with the fragrance of chicken and oily looks. Mostly serve with minced red chili with garlic.
