Coconut, Nature's Awesome Dog Treat

in #food8 years ago

I don't know about your dogs, but mine love coconuts.  We found this out for the first time when we were at the beach with Rebel when we first got here.  John and our friend found a coconut in the water that we brought back with us.  We cracked it open and gave it to Rebel, who went nuts for it.  He spent hours digging out the coconut and the next several weeks breaking the shell into tiny pieces, in typical garden dog fashion.

So I thought it was worth sharing.  If you've got a dog and you're looking for a tasty, healthy treat for it, consider getting it a coconut. The small brown nut sold in stores is perfect, as the natural thing that falls of the tree is giant and intimdating to even Rebel dog.  Once chopped in half though it's another story, as the dogs feast.

Tequila likes her coconut too, we found this out when she repeatedly stole Rebels coconut shell.  The next time we had one we found it in the road.  We have her half and in typical tropical dog fashion, she went nuts for it.  She's especially a fan of the fresh coconut water.

This is the first place I've ever lived where coconuts were, so I'm always surprised when I find them even when I shouldn't be.  I recently found two giant coconuts in the street when acquiring a coke.  I picked them both up, balancing my coke, and carried them home.  It must have been a sight, the gringa picking up both coconuts to walk home, barely balancing a coke bottle on top.

But I'm glad I did it because there's little more that's more amusing than watching a dog eat a coconut.

Not only that, they're extremely healthy and full of vitamins.  They're also a cheap recyclable version of the popular dog toy, kong, which involves treats inside a plastic coating, designed to keep the dog interested in the toy.  Coconuts are natures version, so next time you get your dog a toy, considering buying a coconut and breaking that open for them!t

Sort:

Coconut (especially the oil) is really good for dogs, too! It's best, though, to just give them the cleaned hard shell with as many of the stringy fibers removed as possible-- those can get stuck in their throat/intestines and cause a problem (lived in Jamaica, many moons ago).

Rebel just mulches the fibers, he's pretty good about not eating that stuff thankfully.
