The objective of this study was to determine whether restricting carbohydrates at breakfast would be a simple and feasible strategy for reducing daily exposure to postprandial hyperglycemia (HGPP).

The peak glucose level following breakfast is due to the combination of morning insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes and the high carbohydrate content of western breakfast foods (cereals oatmeal, fruit, etc.).

Researchers in this study show that a low-carbohydrate, high-fat meal is a simple way to have breakfast. This type of diet helps improve glycemic control throughout the day and help reduce other complications related to diabetes.

LIMIT CARBOHYDRATES TO BREAKFAST

The authors of the study confirm that restricting carbohydrates to breakfast is enough to reduce 24-hour exposure to postprandial hyperglycemia and improve glycemic variability.

Study participants with well-controlled type 2 diabetes participated in two experimental feeding days. One day they ate an omelette for breakfast and another day they ate fresh fruit. An identical lunch and dinner was provided daily.

A glucose meter (a device that measures glucose every five minutes) was used to measure blood sugar peaks throughout the day. Participants also reported signs of hunger, fullness and desire to eat.

The researchers expected limiting carbohydrates to breakfast would help prevent the peak after this meal. But they were a little surprised that this had enough effect on the overall control of blood sugar and stability.

The inclusion of a very low carbohydrate meal in patients with type 2 diabetes may therefore be a convenient and simple way to target the glucose peak and reduce the associated complications. The authors note that there is no difference in blood glucose levels in both groups during the day, suggesting that the effect of reducing the overall blood glucose peak after the meal can be attributed to the breakfast responses.

The results of this study show the potential benefits of restricting carbohydrates to breakfast with a balanced lunch and dinner for people with diabetes or not.
