Green onions are what I usually see being used as garnishing whenever a dish is served. I came to ponder how important are spring onions and what benefits they provide to our body.

I have always wondered about the differences of scallions, green onions and spring onions... or are they one and the same.

Green Onions vs Scallions vs Spring Onions

Green onions and scallions are the same. They have milder taste than most onions. Spring onions, on the other hand, have stronger flavor. Although they are all the same in terms of texture and taste, their intensity of flavors differs.

While green onions and scallions are described as very long, with a white stem end that does not bulge out, spring onions look similar, only that they have small onion bulbs at the base. Green onions and scallions are in fact very young onions which were harvested before they had a chance to swell.

As confusing as it may seem, according to thekitchn.com, green onions are called spring onions in other countries like the United Kingdom and Canada.

In the Cebuano dialect, we call them 'sibuyas dahunan'.
