Epic Fail Bibingka Cooking
Hey, what's up Steemians?
I hope all is well with you and your families.
In line with the "All Saints' Day" and "All Souls' Day", you all know that it is some people's tradition to cook some of the favorite food of the departed relatives and loved ones.
My mother's auntie used to cook a lot during this kind of celebration and she's really good at making "bibingka". Indeed, she cooked this food not only during the holiday seasons, but also during these occasions when we honor the dead.
What is Bibingka?
Bibingka is a Filipino rice cake. Coconut milk, rice flour and water are what mainly consist of this food. Some may add milk and eggs. Traditionally, the dish is lined with banana leaves and it is cooked in clay pots, which makes the food preparation itself a bit time-consuming. In the modern era, preparation has also evolved as some people make bibingka by baking it in an oven, some even used caldero, while others use ordinary cake pans. (info source)
There may be a slight difference with the end results, for you can distinguish that smoky charcoal smell from the bibingkas cooked tradionally, as compared to the ones done through modern methods. However, the same spongy and soft texture and taste will appear right on as long as you got the ingredients and the cooking procedure precisely.
While my mother tried to make some bibingka just like that of her aunties' version, it turned out to be some kind of another dish-- a true EPIC FAIL at that. She wanted to achieve this kind of bibingka below, but it turned out otherwise. lol
Bibingka Cooking Gone Wrong
Whatever happened to my mother's bibingka? She said the following ingredients that she used were: 1 cup glutinous rice, 1 cup coconut milk, 1/2 cup white sugar, and 1 tsp. baking powder.
What she did was that she mixed the ingredients altogether thoroughly. In a pan lined with banana leaf, she put in the combined ingredients and she steamed it until it's cooked.
This was the end-product:
As you can see her bibingka turned out to be some kind of tikoy. Tikoy is another kind of rice cake, and it is very popular during Chinese New Year.
So what went wrong? Instead of using "rice" (the regular rice), she experimented on glutinous rice. As a consolation, it was still yummy 'though, as what she related. Nonetheless, she did not accomplish her bibingka goals. HAHA
Until next time guys! Keep safe while celebrating All Saints Day and All Souls Day.
