The Evil Potatoe might have cost Dan Quayle some votes, but what did the Evil Potato cost us?

What is the Evil Potato? is there such a thing as Evil food?

Labeling food as Evil did not start with the potato, it started way earlier. Actually as early as the great depression:

> The Great Depression (1929-39) was the deepest and longest-lasting economic downturn in the history of the Western industrialized world. In the United States, the Great Depression began soon after the stock market crash of October 1929, which sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors.

The great depression had a far worse effect on our food supply than we know, it was the start of the food industry being taken over by big corporations. When the US government did not have enough food for the population these corporations approached the government with a solution and offered to make available "food" for everyone at affordable prices, what was the trade of ?

The trade of was simple, the government needed to change the definition of "food" suitable for human consumption.

Yes, those same corporations that crashed Wall Street, and caused the great depression, had the solution all along.

Processed Food is Good for you, Natural Food is Evil?

It was at that time natural food started getting bombarded by the Evil label and Processed Food started getting high grades from the government agencies that monitor our food supplies.

Butter is Evil --- Margarine is good for you

Animal Fat is Evil --- Vegetable oil is good

Potato is Evil ---  Foods low on starch are good

Eggs are Evil ---  A box of so called Egg Whites is good

There are so many Evil foods produced by farmers today, and so many GOOD FOR YOU foods produced in warehouses and factories. The government has approved over 1000 Chemicals to be used in "Food" manufacturing, chemicals that end up in our bodies.  But the evil farmer and his evil food is the one we have to worry about.

Every time the Food industry is exposed for using poisonous chemicals, they resort to a new avenue of creating more wealth.

Fat Free, Cholesterol Free, Hormone Free, Pesticides Free, Calorie Free, and all those chemicals that were legally added to your Processed Food are now removed one by one at a premium price, but what they fail to tell you is, if it's free from one chemical it does not mean it's free from another.  What do you think replaces sugar in Calorie free food?

If you have lost your common sense definition of food and now you read Labels to know what Food is, you are in real trouble already. Do you know that the government allows up to 1% animal feces in processed foods without the manufacturers having to report that on the label? Do you know there is even a percentage of cyanide allowed in processed food? Do you know the word free on the food label does not mean 100% free ?

Food is anything that does not have a label with a list of ingredients, Potato is food, Potato Chips is Processed food. I am not a paranoid person asking you to quit eating what you like, I am just asking you not to vilify real food in favor of processed or manufactured food. I do enjoy a good hot dog and that occasional burger made with radiated 10 year old meat, but I also make sure to eat real food, food that does not need labels.

i'm one of the 20% that are sensitive to nightshades, but i get your point, so you get the upvote anyway. diet is more complicated than it should ever have to be, but mostly because of the labels, or at least "food" that has to be labelled. i call this, "processed food like substance". this is almost anything in a bag, box, or can.

I do understand when people have a need to know for having food allergy or intolerance. It's the fact that so much have been disguised these days with food labeling that some can no longer tell what food really is.

Back in those "depression days" in Brooklyn my grandparents used to light a garbage can on fire, put a potato on a stick.., and roast'em -- 'Mickies' they were called -- no processed garbage. And now we have to deal with GMO's. It's sick what they've done to our "food."
