Pulcinella Da Stefano - Chiang Mai: Average food and expensive
Italian restaurants are all over the damn place and Chiang Mai is not an exception to this rule. There is a very good reason for this fact and that is because Italian food is awesome. I don't often eat it because it is carb-heavy. However, last night was a pal's birthday and this is where he wanted to go. I was not impressed.
Located near the center of town in a tourist section, the location is likely the root cause of why it is so expensive to eat here. Also, keep in mind that "expensive" is a relative term: Thailand and especially Chiang Mai are generally so inexpensive that anytime a meal costs more than $10 a person, i rank the place as expensive.
There isn't anything wrong with the place, and the food, service, and ambiance of the restaurant itself were all fine and that is the problem. When you have high prices I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a bit better than "fine."
It was a Saturday during dinner service and the place was nearly completely empty. Therefore, I don't think that I am alone in my feeling about this establishment. They did a good job on the place being comfortable and the menu is just the right length. It has all the things you would expect like pizzas and pastas as well as some appetizers.
The food all came out at the same time and this was a real plus. While this sounds normal to some people this is very rare in Thailand because kitchens normally just utilize a "whenever it is ready, it leaves the kitchen" strategy. So I don't want anyone to get the impression that this place is bad because I do not think that is the case. It is simply a bit more expensive than I think Italian food should be in this country. The food wasn't exceptional either. It was just, well, normal and that isn't good enough for these prices.
Overall, i would say that the only chance I would visit here again would be if another person (or this person) was having a birthday party next year and decided to go to the same spot again :)
People will believe there's muscles. There's no need to keep the shell on the pizza lol
