A Wonderful Meal at Kowloon Icehouse / 九龙冰室的美味午餐

Today I went to Guangzhou Library for a one-day study and had lunch at Kowloon Icehouse nearby. The Kowloon Icehouse is a traditional Hongkong restaurant. In the old days, there are only restaurant serving western food for rich-class. After the Second World War, a sort of cafe started to become popular in HK. They served milk tea, coffee, sandwiches which were modelled on the western restaurant. They gradually became the "icehouse" today. "Kowloon icehouse" was even filmmed into a movie in 2001 known as "Goodbye Mr. Cool" in English.

I found that its decoration have an obvious taste of the old HK. It uses many woods to make people feel like the old time. And the lanterns add some festive atmosphere to the icehouse.

It's funny to see that the chopsticks and spoons were placed in a such old-fashioned cup. LOL.

The food there is also delicious. One of the specialty of HK is the "stocking milk tea". Don't be scared! I can promise you, it is absolutely not the thing you can imagine from the name! It is named because it was filtered through some holes as small as those in silk stockings. So it tastes really silky.

Another dish popular in HK is the quickserved noodles served with chicken wings. HK is a very busy and fast life city. As a result, quickserved noodles were really popular in HK for its convenience and delicacy. And the quickserved noodles in Kowloon Icehouse are thin but springy, very traditional taste!

The last dish I ordered, coz I can't eat more myself, is the French toast. It is made of sliced toast and condensed milk. The toast was fried until golden in hot oil and sprinkle with condensed milk. It is crispy outside but soft inside, also a little sweet, cause by the condensed milk. I really enjoy myself eating them.

By the way, there is a kind of bottle of milk tea invented recently. It is called the "light bulb milk tea". Because "light bulb" in Chinese means "the third person beside a pair of couple". So the "light bulb milk tea" is known as the essential for the singles on the Valentine's Day. LOL.

今天去广州图书馆自习，中午在附近的九龙冰室吃午饭。九龙冰室的前身是香港的高档西餐厅，二战以后，以老百姓阶层为客户的一种咖啡厅开始盛行，逐渐演变为现在的“冰室”。九龙冰室则是一间很老牌的冰室，甚至在2001年被拍成同名电影。进到九龙冰室里，会发现内部装修用了很多木制品，给人一种复古的感觉，红灯笼也给店铺增添了一些喜气洋洋的气氛。我点了三个菜：丝袜奶茶，鸡中翅公仔面和西多士。这都是香港很有名的招牌菜。九龙冰室的这些菜品做得很正宗，味道很赞！还见到了几个月前很火的电灯泡奶茶，呵呵。
