Mujaddara - Lentils and Rice with Caramelized Onion

in #food7 years ago (edited)

I discovered Mujaddara about 5 years ago at a local cool bar. At that moment, I was intrigued by the combination of green lentils with rice. Stupid me! :D

This Arabic dish was considered a dish eaten by poor, as many other delicious dishes around the world. We all know the history of pizza :)

Ingredients
20ml Tbsp olive oil
2 onions
5 g tsp cumin
5 g turmeric
5 g pepper
2.5 g cinnamon
2.5 cup water or broth (I used water, I was too hungry to wait)
1 cup basmati rice
1 cup green lentils

  1. Boil the lentils.

  2. In a frying pan, add the olive oil, chopped onions and cook them until onions have softened slightly and started to release their liquid. Raise heat to medium and cook 10 to 12 minutes more, until onions are browned and caramelized. You can add a 5 g of brown sugar. Set aside.

  3. In the same frying pan, add rice, salt and pepper stir well. Add 1/2 cup of water, cover and simmer for about 30 minutes.
  4. Over the rice, add the lentils, spices and another 1/2 cup of water and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  5. You can serve it with yogurt.

After eating this delicious dish, I totally agree with the saying "A hungry man would be willing to sell his soul for a dish of mujaddara." Would you sell your soul for this dish?
