The second most used tool I use in the kitchen other than the chef knife is the pairing knife. Pairing knives are small, usually the size of 3 inches.

Why do you need a pairing knife other than the chef knife? They are used for peeling vegetables and cutting bits out of them. Easier to do with a smaller knife compared to a 12 inch chef knife.

This knife is also needed if you have to carve out finer details in certain workable ingredients to give it some decoration, fun or theatrics in your dishes.
