Sea Urchin for Appetizer Anyone?

Most of you may have learned about sea urchins when you get warned by a local at the beach somewhere of the sea urchin stings. Sea urchin stings may cause redness, swelling and infection (even death) and when you're out there at the beach for a vacation, getting stung is by these is a big no-no.

But what some of us may not know is that sea urchins can also be eaten. They are in fact either eaten raw (just poured with lemon juice or vinegar) or cooked into delicious dish. Sea urchin is actually considered as one of the delicacies in the world.

I had an opportunity to have a taste of the sea urchin during our trip to the Kalanggaman island. We bought one sack of these as my co-workers were fond of eating them. I, on the other hand was unaware of how to eat the sea urchin and what it would taste like. My co-worker offered me one. I ate this alive. Yes. alive The spines were even moving as I held it (on the first photo). The sea urchin's taste was a bit sweet and salty; with the general taste of freshness and the sea on it. I couldn't say I love it actually because it was a bit weird for me but hey, it's not everyday we get to it live sea urchins right?
