Traditional calçots barbecue with friends in Spain!
Last night Sabrina and I had the privilidge to be invited out with friends to enjoy a really cool Spanish tradition of eating home cooked Calçots, a type of spring onion.
Here in the province of Catalonia the word is Calçots, but I have also heard them called Calçotadas, which I think is the Spanish word.
Anyhow, they were cooked the traditional way which is to put them over an open flame and let them char. Once they are cooked enough a bunch are taken off, wrapped up in paper and put aside until it’s time to eat.
To eat the Calçots you take the whole onion, grab some of the top bits and just pull the charred outside layer off. Then you have the cooked onion warm and soft inside!
Calçots are eaten with the traditional “Calçot sauce” which was delicious and suited them perfectly. Normally I’m not a fan of onions at all, they actually make me sick, but these were delicious :)

If you’re ever in Catalonia during Calçot season be sure to give them a try, you’ll have a delicious traditional meal :)
