Whisk[e]y Talk: Blended Malt and Blended Grain Whisk[e]y
Last time we talked about Single Malt and Single Grain whisky, and the main identifying qualities of the two. I though it would be rather interesting to continue this by going further into the kinds of blends that are made from Single Malt, Single Grain and Blended whiskey. If you would like learn about Single Malts and Single Grain Whisky you'll find a link down below.
In hindsight, I should have prefaced that post with "there are two broad categories of whiskies- Single whiskies and Blended whiskies".
While some snobs enthusiasts would tell you that Blended types of whiskey are inferior, whiskey makers and the more humble of us enthusiasts will tell you that is not necessarily true. There are a number of well known brands that are good and some better than Single Malts and Grain whiskey.
Over 90% percent of all Scotch Whisky export are blended whiskies of some kind or another. So it goes without saying much more that there is a mess appeal and a market for blended whisky.
Like we did in the last post, we must set the terms and definitions for clarity's sake. So blend will be understood to mean- distilled from different distilleries.
Blended Malt Whisky
Simply put, a Blended Malt whisky is a finished product of a number of distilleries whose Single Malts stock are pooled together for bottle Blended Malt whisky. Another designation this kind of whisky is Pure Malt or Vetted Malt. All Blended Malt whiskies are Blended whiskies but not all Blended whiskies are Blended Malt whiskies.Typically, most well known Blended Malts are Scottish exports and one of the only places the designation is legalistically defined is in Scotland. Though some could define a blended rye malt as a Blended rye malt or any other single malted grain (for instance, in the U.S.), there is no legislative backup so many of those distilleries will call them that to maybe differentiate them in the market.
Blended Grain Whisky
While, like Grain whiskies, there aren't that many to speak of, they are a distinct product in the whisky market and count as one of many additives when Scotch Blends are considered. Blended Grain whiskies are a final bottled product from multiple distilleries whose respective Single Grain whiskies are appreciated for their production.Because of them not being that popular on their own, they aren't well available outside their locale of production so and there isn't a legal definition anywhere to that full satisfies what a Blended Grain whisky could be. So while the Irish might have one definition, the U.S. has it's own and so do the rest of the big whiskey producer of the world.
For the reasons stated above, some American Grain whiskey, specifically Bourbon like Breckenridge, who outsource, could considered Blended Grain whisky.
