Food Chronicle #1 - NYC Korean Hot Spot - SIK GAEK

in #food7 years ago

Whooo! I love Korean food. My husband introduced it to me right after we started dating. He spent a year in the Army in South Korea and came home with a passion for it. And, I can see why. We live in Florida now -- but was always on the hunt for a great Korean restaurant while living in NY. Unfortunately, it's tougher to find here in Palm Beach County -- but want to share an amazing spot with you if you're ever in NYC/Woodside, Queens area.

========== SIK GAEK!! ==========

This joint is 100% a pure hole in the wall. They managed to tightly pack enough tables in there to feed maybe 20-30 people. But, don't go looking for elbow room in here. Crowds pile in the tiny entryway waiting for a seat on busier night. On less busier nights, you can be till expect it to be packed. That's how good it is here.

Let's dive into some of what makes this place such a hot spot.......

First - let's talk FRESH. Like really. Octopus and lobsters are placed into boiling hot pots fired up right on the table - WHILE STILL ALIVE. Everything you see here was still very much alive and moving when it hit our table.

They're even more widely known for their live octopus. They chop it up into little pieces that are still squirming on the plate. Watch out for the suction cups though. They have a tendency to stick to your inside check and tongue. Yummmmm.

Lastly, one of the MUST have's! The Soju Watermelon Bowl. I loved this so much I duplicated it many times at home parties and BBQ's. Be careful though, this clear liquor has almost NO taste or smell whatsoever and does a good job of just blending in with whatever you mix it with. So, will give you the impression you're not drinking at all. And, that can have drastic effects once it sneaks up on you.

Enjoy!
