Gulab jamun, a popular Indian dessert : Vegan

Gulab jamun is one more popular sweet around the Indian subcontinent. It is known with different names at different places but Gulab jamun is the most popular name. Traditionally it is made with milk solids and deep fried in animal fat like ghee or clarified butter but here my Gulab jamun recipe is completely free from any animal ingredients and it is vegan.

Ingredients

  • Sweet potato (Baked and mashed) 1 cup
  • Oats flour 1/4 cup
  • Refined wheat flour 1/4 cup
  • Cardamom powder 1/4 tsp
  • Cane sugar powdered 1 tsp
  • Raisins to put into jamuns
  • baking powder 1/2 tsp
  • Salt a pinch
  • Vegetable oil for deep frying

Procedure

  • Bake and mash sweet potatoes and take 1 cup puree.
  • Mix all dry ingredients.
  • Make a smooth dough with sweet potato puree and dry ingredients. Add 1 tsp oil and water if required.

  • Make smaller than lemon size balls and place one raisin each in all balls.

  • Heat oil and deep fry all balls on low to medium flame till golden brown.

  • Transfer balls into the sugar syrup and let them soak sugar syrup for 1-2 hours.
  • Serve hot or cold, in both conditions it tastes amazing.
