Minecraft: Baking edition
Whoever said that boys aren't picky clearly doesn't know what they're talking about. Perhaps they just haven't met my 7 year old son yet. Before his third birthday, I was the "chocolate cake with sprinkles" kind of mom. I wasn't good at baking because I didn't care about baking. It was something that never interested me - mostly because I didn't like washing all the dishes that comes with it!
A few weeks before his 3rd birthday, he saw a picture of a Cars cake and he pleaded with me that he wanted one like that. I watched a few You Tube video's and decided to try it. I didn't know how to work with fondant and the video's gave me enough information to try it. It didn't look bad but I can honestly say that by taking one look at it, one would be able to say: "Yup, that's a first-timer alright!" Ever since then, each year all my children had some or other birthday cake order. It's safe to say that I can bake a cake by now and that fondant doesn't scare the hell out of me anymore.
For his 7th birthday party tomorrow, he "ordered" a Minecraft cake. He is a huge Minecraft fan and when he told me about this cake, I had no idea what he is talking about. I asked him to find a picture and then I will tell him if I am able to bake such a cake. He came to me with this:
"Are you kidding me?"
That was my exact words to him. He usually has a very tall order but this seemed too easy to be true. "A square cake with brown and white icing and a few blobs of red?" I asked, pulling a very confused face. I was under the impression that he would ask for something very complicated but this I did not expect. "No mom, it must be smooth like the other cakes you made."
Oh crap, he's talking about fondant!
For some reason, I just don't like working with fondant. It always sticks - to the rolling surface or the rolling pin, or both and then I have to scrape it off and start over. I then thought "Oh well, it's only a square" and had him sit with me to look at some Minecraft cake pictures on Google. He knew exactly what he wanted...
He chose this one for me to use as an example:

Today was the day that the cake had to be baked and decorated. In this small little desert town there was no white fondant to be found, not even white marshmallows to make my own, so I chose second best which was Marzipan. I knew it was not going to be white but I had no other choice.
I tried and I succeeded...
Thank you @busybeee for helping me to roll all of the Marzipan balls and for your support all the way from start to finish today. You did a great job with the cupcakes and I'll leave them for you to show-off in your next post ;)

That's so cool!! Mya youngest will be 9 in December. I think he will love a Minecraft cake. But I will get my daughter to make it.
Thank you @onetree. There are many different kinds of Minecraft cakes on Google. Whoever bakes it, please show me first, lol.
You did an awesome job! I feel the same about baking but as soon as my son came along I also had this urge to bake his birthday cakes, I won't even attempt fondant though! Happy birthday to your boy!
I guess it's part of motherhood...we'll do anything for them.
Thanks so much @sweetpea! =)
Wow!! That's pretty awesome!! My son just had his Star Wars party. I'm sure he'd love to have a Minecraft one next year ☺️
Star Wars...hmmm...that can't be an easy cake to bake! Lol.
Seems like Minecraft is the top choice for boys lately.
Thanks @cheeto.blue

Hahaha... Boys ARE so totally more picky than girls... well, maybe these days... And I know that from my niece and nephew! Niece didn't mind any present as long as she had a prezzie... nephew wanted specifically what he wanted! Colour, size and wrapping too!! Then it spread to clothes, and everything else as they grew up.... Lol...
Totally enjoyed your baking story... I don't bake - so good enough I enjoy reading about others baking! ;)
Exactly! Boys aren't just happy with cars anymore. Lol.
Thanks @ackhoo
Oh man, yours is way better. it's spelled mineqraft though ;-)
Thank you @cryptastic. I'm glad you think mine looks way better. About the spelling...I did a search now and I had to look very far to find "mineqraft" so I see that it does exist. However, the most popular search results gave "minecraft" as the spelling. Interesting! I think you mean the whole "qurator" thing, don't ya? lol

haha you got it
Qool, qryptastiq, you almost quaght me, haha
