Bangkok street food 1: Seafood Soi One
Bangkok has so many amazing places to eat, ranging from 5 star restaurants to street food vendors. In this post I'm going to tell you about a great street market place that is well known for it's fresh seafood.
This is not a restaurant like you'd be used to, neither is it technically street food. The 'restaurant' is setup in a steel shed just off the side of the busy Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok.
During the day the shed houses a market selling clothes, fruit and other stuff, but at night the market moves out and they put tables and chairs in turning it into a seafood restaurant. There are actually two sheds side by side, in this review I'm going to talk about my visit to one of them (the one on the left side in some of the following pictures).
Here is a Google Street view picture showing the two sheds during the day. When I visited it was night time I didn't get a decent picture from outside like this. Further down, I'll post the actual map location so you can find these restaurants if you come to Bangkok.
The two sheds during the day when they are markets.
When you arrive in the evening you will find a large selection of very fresh fish and other seafood laid out at the front of the restaurant.
There is no denying the fish and seafood is super fresh!
As you walk into the restaurant you will see fresh vegetables, this is where any vegetables are prepared and cooked for your meal.
You are now in the restaurant and can see the simple metal tables with plastic chairs. It might look a little rough and even a little dirty, but I can assure you the food is super clean and fresh, and most importantly both delicious and cheap, so it really shouldn't matter what the restaurant 'looks like'.
The inside of the restaurant
The menu is really extensive, unfortunately as I was with friends I didn't get a chance to take many pictures of the menu, but here are 2 pages showing how the menu is made up of nice easy to see pictures of each dish.
100 Thai Baht is less than US$3 so you can see that the food is really cheap!
No spicy Thai meal is the same without a nice ice cold beer. Leo is a local beer that is cheap, especially in places like this. Thais and people like me who've lived here a while put ice in our beers to help keep them extra cold. Which is important in a place like this as there is no airconditioning in this restaurant, only some fans.
The Food
We had fresh mussels with garlic which were absolutely fantastic. They come with a really fresh, spicy dipping sauce that you have to try.
And we had one of my favourites, grilled Pork Neck. Which was really succulent and tasty.
We had a Thai pork omelette and a dish of mixed vegetables. Because we were all so hungry it was hard to get a picture of each dish before someone dived in to eat it!
And fried squid with garlic. This was very popular so was almost gone by the time I took the picture!
All this delicious food is cooked up the front of the restaurant, so passers-by can see and smell the food as it's being cooked. Here is the chef grilling someone's order on the Thai style BBQ.
We had a really tasty meal at this restaurant and I would highly recommend it if you are ever in Bangkok. To help you find it here is a map of the location. It is very close to Phloen Chit BTS station, which makes it pretty easy to get to. I've marked the location on the map with a Red X.
