Thai Snacks & Treats

in #food7 years ago (edited)

Wherever you go in Southeast Asia, you are sure to find delicious treats. If you're hungry, every corner shop, street vendor, and local restaurant will surely have something to satisfy your rumbling tummy.

It's not all steaming bowls of pho, greasy fried rice, and spicy curries. While Westernized Asian food is delicious (and although many of the original versions can be easily found here), there's so much more to discover. And it's only available here in Southeast Asia!

Earlier today, I was given these delights from the streets of Bangkok, Thailand. The smaller white treats are likely a mixture of sugar, coconut milk, and rice flour, which are then steamed. Simple but tasty!

And what of the monstrous, greasy mess next to the sweets? Is that fried chicken? No! For the first time ever, I'm trying deep-fried banana & sticky rice. As you'll see in the photo below, there also appears to be some shredded coconut added for good measure.

Was it greasy? Yes, but it was also sweet and crunchy too. As is common in many Thai foods, a single dish can offer a diverse array of flavours and textures. This did not disappoint.

Stay tuned for other treats from the rest of Southeast Asia! In the meantime though, what are your favourite Southeast Asia? Do you have a favourite Thai appetizer, Vietnamese soup, Singapore platter, or Burmese snack? Share it with our SteemIt friends in the comments below!

Hey. Thanks for the comment.

The Philippines has some great food, but I haven't made to Burma yet. What kind of treats do you recommend? Do the Burmese have a decent street food culture?
