In the talk below the speaker explains why we overeat, He states that over time our brain associates good feelings with eating. Hence when we feel bad due to day to day life getting hard on us, due to work stress or whatever reason, we tend to eat to just feel good even when we are not really hungry, this leads to overeating and the habit in the long run.
He suggests the solution is curiosity, get curious about what we are feeling when we feel hungry, are we really hungry or is it something else, the next step if it's something else, is to get deeper and find out what is the cause of the unpleasant emotion.
