Venezuelan Creole sweets made with wheat flour...

Hello, kind reader of @adsactly

If you are on a diet, I recommend that you stop reading this publication. The sweets or desserts I bring you today are extremely delicious, but with lots of calories. So if you're one of those who put calories before good tastes, you're not going to like this publication; but if you're like me, who doesn't mind dieting and prefers a good taste, even if it's a sin, keep reading because you're going to love this.

In Venezuela, as in all countries of the world, the most delicious foods are sometimes not the healthiest. They are not the ingredients, sometimes in the way we prepare them and even the amount we eat. We all know that the more delicious a food is, the more we want to eat it: in tremendous pieces and large quantities. That's what happens with the desserts I bring below. If you eat one, you want to eat them all. These sweets or snacks are made with flour, some have egg, sugar and oil, hence the explosive mixture, but delicious. Let's start with this exquisite and sugary tour:

Pump

Pump

This dessert owes its name to its circular, spongy shape and because it is a delicacy full of calories. The dough is made with wheat flour, butter, yeast, sugar, milk and vanilla. First mix the dry ingredients and then add the liquids. Knead well and let stand for the yeast to work. When the dough is twice its size, knead again, cut into small portions and make circles of dough. These circles fry it, take them out and let them cool. Already cold, open them and fill them with pastry cream, chocolate cream and there are even those who throw arequipe. This is a delicacy of the greedy gods!

Churros

Churros

Oh, this is one of my favorites. I'm passionate about churros. I must acknowledge my weakness for them, though in general for everything that is fried. The churro is a good snack and there are those who can have breakfast and even dinner with them. The secret is to boil the water, add the sugar, the salt and the butter. Stir these ingredients and when they are well beaten, add the flour and stir until the mixture is removed from the container. You can put this pasta in a pastry bag, a churrera or in a plastic bag. The idea is that you put it in the form of lines in a very hot oil. When they are already fried, remove them from the kitchen and put them on an absorbent paper. Even if they are hot, you sprinkle them with sugar and you can even add cocoa powder. I'm pretty sure it must be a sin to stop eating churros.

Golfeados

Golfeados

Another delicacy made with wheat flour! The "golfeado" is a sweet very appreciated by Venezuelans and can be bought in any bakery in the country. Its smell of anise, papelon and freshly baked bread can awaken even the dead. Basically it is a sweet bread, in the shape of a snail, filled with melted papelon and cheese. And after it is done, it is bathed with more papelon and more cheese. People usually accompany it with a cup of coffee with milk and even with a black coffee in the afternoons. The good "golfeado" is full of "melao" and the dough is delicate and smooth. I believe that if paradise had a smell and a taste, it would be close to the smell and taste of a "golfeado".

Acemitas

Acemita

Acemita is another sweet bun, with cinnamon and vanilla. They are round and small. They are also found in all Venezuelan bakeries. When these rolls are freshly made, you can spread butter and even chocolate on them. In my childhood, I remember that my dad used to spend every morning at the bakery and buy bags of acemite that he would take home at noon after returning from work. After the nap, Grandma made coffee with milk or hot chocolate and served it in large, colorful cups. We, still with sleep in our eyes, dipped the acemites in the thick, foaming liquid. Our cheeks became red with steam, sweetness and taste.

Domplinas

Domplinas

In mentioning this sweet, I must say that many of the sweets I have pointed out are not properly Venezuelan, but our country has adopted them, so much so that they are very popular in this land of grace. This is the case of the "Domplinas," which are "English," but which Venezuelans, specifically the people of Paria, Sucre state, have taken as their own. Like the previous snacks, this one is also made of flour, sugar, egg and butter. The "Domplina" is so versatile, that some people consider it a kind of wheat flour arepa and others like bread. Like one thing or another, it is delicious and delicate.

In recent years, wheat flour seems to have fallen into disgrace. On the one hand there are allergies and intolerances, which fortunately are now more easily detected and on the other hand the tendency to withdraw it from our diet with arguments such as that wheat flour fattens. If we are honest, this flour is present in 40% of the foods we consume daily and its use, in various desserts, is not only essential, but is a guarantee that the dessert will be delicious and spongy. Like all things in life, the idea is to keep the balance and fall into temptation not so often. ;)

Very tempting food. The water has come to tongue after seeing the pictures. I think it would have been better if I could do the test. But this is not possible.

Nice food. Love it.

Thank you for commenting!

These desserts are, indeed, very delicious. My favourite is the "golfeado"; the smoothness of the dough and the taste of the "papelón" are two qualities that come together pleasantly on our palate. It is true that excess wheat flour may not be as healthy, but, as you say, it can be consumed moderately, and you can even choose to use wheat bran in its preparation to give it fiber. Several times I have eaten whole wheat "golfeados".
Thank you for your tasty post, @nancybriti.

As you say and do, the idea is not to refuse these culinary pleasures, but to eat in moderation and try to consume the healthiest versions, as in this case: to add bran. Thank you for your comment, @josemalavem.

Wheat really is the best flour for baked goods - I agree! I loved hearing the story about Acemita.
And those Golfeados! Those do look heavenly. I would love those for breakfast with coffee. I learned a new word today too - papelon. yum.
