Dear Steemians, This Is How To Make "Rouladen", A Special German Dish.

The "Beef Rouladen" recipe is quite popular in Europe, people have mentioned that this very dish must have originated from Germany. In Germany it is either called "Beef Rouladen" or "Rinderrouladen".

 The term “rouladen” means “rolls” so we're basically talking about “beef rolls” in other words.

It is perfect with mashed potatoes, gravy and bit of vegetables to complete this meal!  I’m quite sure your neighbors will be tempted to drop by for a visit once they perceive the aroma that comes from your house.  In Germany, most families like to prepare this outstanding dish on Sundays or on special occasions.

Here are the ingredients needed to make a standard recipe of 8 pieces of beef rouladen. To prepare the rouladen and the sauce you would need:

For the sauce

3 Tbsp unsalted butter

3 Cup beef stock

⅛ Cup diced country ham

1 small onion diced

1 Tbsp tomato paste

2 Tbsp flour

¼ `of diced carrot

1 Celery ribs, diced

2 Bay leaves

⅛ Tsp dried thyme

6 Parsley stems  

Salt and pepper,to taste


Step 1 

Melt the butter in a large saucepan at medium high heat. Add the onions, saute a bit then add country ham,carrot and celery stir. Cook vegetable until they start to get tender while stirring continuously.

Step 2

Add the flour and stir in to make a roux let it cook for about 10 minute until it starts turning brown.

Step 3

Add the beef stock to the mixture, while stir or whisking to avoid any lumps, add all the stock. After making sure that there are no lumps in the sauce. Add in the tomato paste, thyme,and then add the bay leaves. Let the sauce boil then add the parsley. 

Step 4

When it boils for about 5 minutes, reduce the heat and and let it simmer, once the sauce is thick enough, remove from heat and set aside.

You could also drain the liquid from the vegetables if you wish to.

For making the roulade

8 Slices of round steak(¼ of an inch or about 5 cm in thickness)

8 slices of bacon

¼ Cup of Dijon mustard

½ Cup of thinly sliced onions

1 tbsp unsalted butter

1 cup of shredded  cheese (any cheese of your choice)

Salt and pepper to taste 

Step 1

In  skillet, add the bacon and let it cook at medium heat, remove from heat when the bacon is crisp drain the oil using a paper towel-lined plate  and set aside. 

Melt the butter in a saute pan, add the onins and cook it on very low heat, stir continously and make sure the heat is very low. remove from heat when the onions is golden brown it would take about 15 minutes.

Step 2

Using the salt and pepper season all the slices of beef and lay them spread  out.

Step 3

Using a cooking brush, spread a layer of mustard on each of the beef slices laid out, add the bacon, spread the onions, and the cheese. roll it up and tie it up with a kitchen twine.

preheat your oven at 450 degrees, Grease your pan or oven proof skillet, place the roulade in it and cook in the oven for 15-20 minutes. remove from  heat, let it rest for about 5--10 minutes, cut out  the  thread and slice the roulade in 1/2 inches, smother with sauce and serve. Best served with mashed potatoes and vegetables.
