The Snoligoster: Fearsome Critter

in #folklore6 years ago

The Snoligoster is a mythological monster of perfect adaptation to the cypress swamps of which it is said to inhabit. The Snoligoster is described as a large amphibian, somewhat resembling a crocodile in shape, but slightly larger. However, unlike a crocodile, the Snoligoster has no arms or legs and is equipped with sleek, glossy, black fur, somewhat like that of a seal. This sleek fur aids in its methods of camouflage.

One of the more strange features of the Snoligoster is the propeller like appendages on the end of its tail. These not only resemble the blades of a propeller, but they also manage to act in a similar fashion. This is how the legless Snoligoster moves about the swamps. The appendages spin about quickly, propelling the Snoligoster through the murky waters.

While blending with its surroundings in the cypress swamps, the Snoligoster does have one protruding spike in the center of its back, that he uses to stake unsuspecting prey who think the spear is only the splintered trunk of a young cypress. The Snoligoster loves to eat human meat best of all, but any naive animal will do. Sometimes prey is caught in the mouth of the beast, and then tossed from their dangerous mouth upwards to be impaled on the spikey protuberance. To eat their victims, the Snoligoster uses their strange tail to dig a hole in the earth. It then removes the incapacitated prey from their spike by scraping them along the perimeter. The Snoligoster then uses the propeller-bladed tail to blend the victims into a mush, which is the preferable consistency of food for the creature.

Unfortunately so, in the Antebellum South of American history, the Snoligoster was used as a cautionary tale for slaves wishing to escape.

This fearsome critter is not to be confused with the Snallygaster of American folklore, which shares a similar name, but resides in more northerly parts of the U.S.

Wow! A dinosaur?

It blends its victims into mush using its propeller tail. That sounds awful. I love it. I really enjoy learning about these bizarre and sometimes absurd beasts and critters. The stranger the better. I think the mountain whale type creature is still my favorite
