Boroboroton 暮露暮露団

in #folklore6 years ago

Tsukumogami are spirits that inhabit tools and common items in Japanese legend, and which can be dangerous to people if angered. One common tsukumogami is the Boroboroton, which haunts tattered sleeping futons which have been forgotten by their owners.

These spirits crave attention and friendship, both from members of the household and from other tsukumogami. If spurned, the Boroboroton can kill, by wrapping itself around the neck of the victim and strangling them to death.

Because these spirits often occurred due to the item being forgotten and unused, many people would be sure to destroy any old and unused sleeping mats in special ceremonies, designed to propitiate the lonely spirit. Otherwise, an unsuspecting sleeper could find themselves thrown out of bed in the middle of the night with an angry futon choking the life from them.

Boroboroton are also known to throw some pretty wild (and weird ) ragers. Their loneliness drives them to seek out other tsukumogami at night, and these gatherings can become quite noisy and raucous, preventing sleep for any humans in the house.
