Greater Butterfly Orchid.jpg

Alongside another public pathway in upper swaledale is a wonderful meadow where these Butterfly Orchids grow, also in the meadown are Pryrmid Orchids, Meadow Vetch, and a plethora of wild dog rose bushes.

Rock rose.jpg

The common rock rose grows in profusion amongst the rocks along the footpath in upper Swaledale.

Mountain Everlasting in flower in Upper Teesdale, this is classed as the English Edelweiss.

Along the roadside here in Swaledale can be seen these Goats Beard clocks, similar to the Dandelion but more rough in texture.

Greater Burnett.JPG

In many of our traditional meadows can be seen the Greater Salad Burnett, an edible herb when picked young.

Another close turf species are these Autum Gentians that have managed to survive the lawnmower type teeth of the local Swaledale sheep, you have to look prety hard to find these being so small.

Dog Rose.jpg

One of my all time faviorite shrubs, the common dog rose, we also pick the hips to make a medicinal rosehip syrup.

Chained.jpg

These two brother Swaledale Rams were spotted in Upper Swaledale, the farmers chain them together to prevent them fighting and killing each other, I can think of a dew global leaders that might benefit from this kind of treatment.

Burnt Tip Orchid 1.jpg

These next flowers are in a private field owned by one of our freinds, a nice pair of Burnt Tip Orchids, such a lovely sight in late spring.

Milk Vetch.jpg

Another wild vetch which once made the milk taste like real milk, aptly named, The Milk Vetch, once a more common sight in traditional meadows.
