Pink Magnolia Flowers
I found this Magnolia tree in April and the flowers were just beginning to bloom. The first four photos are dark because it was getting ready to rain.
Magnolias are one of the most ancient trees known to man. They belong to the Magnoliaceae family and were named after Pierre Magnol who was a French botanist.
Magnolia flowers grow on trees only; not bushes or vines, and there are many different species. They bloom from April to June and will be seen before the leaves. The large, beautiful magnolia flowers can be anywhere from 3-12 inches in diameter when in full bloom.
Magnolia flowers do not have nectar but they do have pollen that is enriched with proteins. The pollen along with the sugary scent of the flowers, attracts bees which are the main pollinators.
I went back to this tree 3-4 weeks later on a warm, sunny day in May and most of the flowers were gone, but look at the leaves now. Here is what was left and I also found two large buds.
Petals and sepals are parts of a flower and they help with the reproduction process. The petals attract the pollinators, and the sepals protect the flower while it is a bud. When the petals and sepals are fused, they are called, "tepals." One magnolia flower can have up to 18 tepals.
Magnolia trees can live for 100 years.

I didn't know those were Magnolias
always use to think they were tulip
trees, by the shapes. Tho I did know
of two huge ancient magnolias in
front of a old hospital in California.
Never seen them blooming, just
wasn't there when they were lol

Oh, I bet those big magnolias are awesome when they are in bloom and it's a shame that you didn't see the flowers. This one was only about 15' high.
