Datura double purple

The origin of the name comes from the Hindu "dhát", a poison prepared with plants, and "tatorah", narcotic. Plants of this genus and some other genera of Solanaceae present compounds with hallucinogenic properties, which has been known since time immemorial. Primitive peoples, both from Eurasia and the New World, made intensive use of these properties in mystical and religious rituals, as well as for medicinal purposes; other uses had criminal intent, aiming to numb the victims to steal or kill them.

The hallucinogenic effects include visions and sensations that were taken as forms of communication with the gods. Healers and soothsayers sought inspiration from these visions. Rites of initiation, as well as passage from conditions of children to adults, involved the use of preparations of these plants. In the region of Bogota the widows and slaves of the dead warriors received a drink with extracts of these plants, which put them in a state of torpor, in order to be buried alive with their masters
