The term weight loss first describes a wanted or unwanted reduction in body weight. During a diet, slimming is a desirable effect. Unintentional strong and sudden weight loss is a warning signal and may indicate illnesses or parasites.

Accidental weight loss, on the other hand, may also be the result of an underlying disease.
