Lifting Light or Heavy??steemCreated with Sketch.

I'm kinda sick right now, so I decided to lift light..

but for serious, I was doing shrugs today, just using the dumbbells. While I like it and feel I do get a good workout from it, (my trapezius muscle gets a pump and I can feel the burn a little) I get the feeling that I could be lifting much more weight.. even a medium weight that I could control and not feel like I'm gonna burst a blood vessel when I lift it.

(those are 50 kilo dumbells, that's 110 lbs for us westerners)

The problem is, while I could lift the weight needed to fully work my traps, I can't safely lift a dumbbell that heavy and move it even the few inches it would need to move into the proper shrug position. The first commercial gym I went to those many years ago, in Hawaii, had a dedicated shrug machine. So you just load it up with the weight plates you want, and then it's already the perfect height.. you just grab the handles and shrug away. It looked a lot like this one..

that was the only gym that had that particular equipment. So to get the safety and be able to use some decent weight I used to do smith machine shrugs. It's really just a bar on rails that control the side to side motion (only goes up and down) and you can load it up with whatever weight you can fit on the bar. The problem with this one is, the bar is, ermmmm, in a certain dangerous position that feels all kinds of weird as you lift the bar up and down for each shrug.

So, my ultimate solution for shrugs (when I get a chance to design and build my own equipment) is to make some kind of hinged arms machine where I can put the weight onto the sides..

or maybe like a wagon thing, so the 'weights' (like maybe tires or coconuts or something) can be thrown in to add weight..

yeah. OK, well, just sharing my thoughts with you all. Maybe someone else had similar thoughts. :)

That must be tough. Oh well, I don't go to the gym but I do tough chores in the house. I can lift a bed and a an average ref. lol

:P thats the real life workout. good functional strength.

Yoda didn't look very impressed with your pink dumbbell! :D

Hey! judge my pink dumbbell by its size, do not.. :P

I didn't mention the size.. just the color. Then again, I've always been partial to purple :P

Excellent exercise for isolating that muscels are you took dumbels not to heavy, sit on the bench and the dumbels need to be behind your back and then shrug away abd can really contract that muscles.... also I noticed BIG improvment when combining light and heavy.... for every muscle group 3-4 exercises 4x8.... first go heavy with 8reps 4series, then next exercise go light with 12-15 reps x4.... just go easy until you get healthy :)

Cool! thanks, i'll give that a try. :)

I have two dumbbells, 5-kilo each. I tried using those 2 during my 7.8km morning walk and I realized how bad my idea was😂. Tried flipping big tires as well. It was fun and I can feel my muscles burning.

I like the idea of a wagon. Maybe you should try it and don't forget to write about it.
