Making new sandflea rake
We got up this morning to the wind blowing 20 knots out of the south so did not fish. That does not mean we did not work all day. The last time we got sandfleas we altered my rake and it did not work, so we built me one like my husbands, it is not finished yet but almost there. I will finish it tomorrow.
I took my rake apart and my husband looked through his pile of metal for parts to build my new one.
He found some flat pieces of aluminum that will work and some scrap angle aluminum
We had a piece of flat 3/4in aluminum but only enough for 1 side so we had to go to Home Depot and buy another piece of it. We also bought the 1/2inch hardware cloth to go in it. They had plastic coated wire so we are trying it instead of the regular wire, hoping it will last longer in salt water.
We put my old handle on it with one bolt on the bottom, a strip of aluminum across the handle and a bolt through the strip and handle
I haven't put the wire on the sides yet, but tomorrow I will cut it to fit and take stainless leader wire and weave it to the ends, sew them together.
This is a little side note, flip flops make good knee pads.
Could you explain more about sand fleas for those of us who don't live near the ocean? And why do you need a rake for them? This is all new to me!
@scribblingramma they are a mole crab and live on the edge of the water at the beach, we take these rakes to the beach and catch them in it. Then we bring them home, blanch them, lay them out to dry and bag them up to put in the freezer. this is what they look like
That is very interesting to see! Thank you!
You are welcome @scribblingramma I am glad you found it interesting
Sandfleas? What's that?
