My favorite catch...
Here is a pic of my very first yellowtail I've ever caught off of a pier. I caught this guy in 2017. I used a jighead and a chunk of freshly caught and filleted mackerel. I caught this guy at hermosa beach pier.
The best part about the catch is I was using a bass setup, and abu garcia ambassador 6500 and a medium casting rod. A little bass setup that can handle most things in freshwater. The setup is mostly meant for freshwater not saltwater but I decided to use it anyways because it can handle most things you catch on the pier. I used 15 lb test for this catch as well.
It was so exciting catching this fish. When it hit, it immediately started to pull drag off of my reel. At first, I thought I caught a ray or something based off how hard it was pulling, but eventually I realized it wasn't a ray it was some sort of fish! As it got up I realized it was a yellowtail, and we needed to gaff the fish. Luckily, an angler nearby had a rope gaff and my dad was able to use it to gaff it near the head and successfully bring it up.
That day was the day I caught my first yellowtail and it is probably one of my prized catches. I know they get much bigger but I was so stoked to be able to catch a yellowtail off the pier because that hardly ever happens, especially nowadays. When I took it home we filleted it and eventually had it for sashimi and it was sooo good. That's the benefits of catching your own fish.
Fishing is so relaxing and it is good for your soul and I recommend everyone to give it a shot. It requires a lot of time and patience. So if you have a day off or have some free time, I would recommend hitting the pier, a lake, the boat, or wherever you can do some fishing, but make sure you have the proper gear/lures before you go.
