I thought I would comment since you mentioned trying to find dry firewood. Every camper should know how to find dry firewood even in the rain. You look for dead limbs that have fallen and hung in the branches of trees. These will be dry because of the tree cover and not being on the ground as you mentioned. Also, you combine that with what I call "lighter knot" that you find by kicking apart a rotten pine log on the ground and pulling out the knots. These are natures fire starters. Knowing these two tips you can start a fire in the rain. Always leave a hole in your fire lay towards the wind direction so you can add more dry material and lighter knot and blow air into the fire.
