Oio (Bonefish) - Yesterday
Yesterday was a sunny afternoon and I got to take off work a little early. I decided to fish the flats off Aina Haina. I really just wanted to get out and clear my mind as it has been super busy at work.
I walked the flats whipping a small plastic pink curly tail. I could see the small fish breaking the surface and kept casting past those areas hoping to get a Papio (Trevally) but nothing.
I tried a fast retrieve. Then a slow retrieve. I changed the movement of my rod. I changed the color of the curly tails but nothing. I kept whipping and the hours past.
Then as my mind started to wander. Bang. Big hit and it started to head straight out away from me. I loosened the drag and walked slowly towards the direction the fish was heading trying to take up the slack as I slowly tightened the drag, once I had an idea where the fish was headed.
Once I got my bearings and my plan of how I would fight the fish it was on. The fish put up a good fight. After a while it got close to me where i could see it. An Oio (Bonefish). Once it saw me it took off again.
I knew I had to play it smart and tire it out as I had no net. The fight went on and I decided I needed to work my way closer to shore which was about 50 yards away. As I fought the Oio I walked closer and closer to the shore.
Finally the fish tired out and I was able to guide it to the shallows where I was able to land it. You can see from the picture how beat up the fish got as a result of the fight.
I thought to myself that this was the luck of finding my Tarpon picture. I took the fish home and gave it to my neighbor who loves to make fishcake.
It was a good day.
