Lost a Pea Puffer :(

in #fish9 years ago

Hi guys! It's true, I unfortunately lost one of the three dwarf puffers from my five gallon tank. I began to notice a couple of days ago that I mainly saw two of the three puffers swimming around. Naturally I thought the third one was hiding in the Malaysian wood displayed in the tank as it was a frequent hiding spot for them. Sad to say this was not the case. I believe this puffer was a male as he was larger than the other two I currently have in the tank. He seemed healthy and had no signs of illness so I do not believe there was anything I could have done for him other than keep up the water parameters that I have been maintaining.

Although I lost one of the puffers, the other two are doing quite well. I was not able to capture a shot of them sleeping because I just noticed they often lay down on either the Malaysian wood or just on the sand when they sleep which is really interesting as some fish typically float just above any surface when they sleep. I thought it was neat.

I am solely feeding snails to these puffers at the moment, however, I ran to my local fish store and got some frozen brine shrimp to test. I'm hoping they take to eating it because I'm not sure I can produce enough snails to maintain their diet as raising snail eggs can take time and making frequent trips to the fish store for snails can get annoying.

I bought the Hikari brand of brine shrimp. I like Hikari products so I hope the brine shrimp does well for the fish. I plan to feed these to the puffers if they have an appetite for them, however, if they show no sign of interest then I believe I can just feed it to my severums instead. I would feed frozen brine shrimp to my betta, but the research I have done says it is not best for them to feed on frozen brine shrimp.
Other than the loss of my pea puffer, the rest of the fish seem to be doing fine.

My golden severum is still in the ten gallon tank waiting to be moved into the seventy-five gallon tank. I need some time finding a good stand for the bigger tank which is the only reason why the setup progress is being delayed. I am trying to find a decent stand for the tank that is also not very expensive as most of the stands I have seen are. Hopefully I find one soon.

These are the neon tetras I mentioned in my previous post. This is a more close up picture. I enjoy having them in the tank as they have a unique color than the other fish in this tank. Additionally, they are not aggressive by any means and are community fish which means they thrive in larger groups. I only have two of them at the moment. I should probably have at least seven of them at a time together, however, I do not want to overcrowd the tank. That could harm the fish by spiking water conditions.
So this is my short update on how things are going with my tanks!
I plan on running to the fish store possibly tomorrow to get some water test strips so I can regularly check my pH, nitrate, nitrite and ammonia levels in each tank so I can more accurately regulate everything. I also hope to get some root tabs or plant fertilizer for my anubias nana petite and the baby tears plants because I have noticed that they have not been thriving as much even with the lights on for so long. Of course I should have realized that the plants cannot just thrive on the content in the tank alone without nutrients also provided to them. Oh well, better late than never.
I hope you guys liked this update post and please if you have any questions about the aquarist hobby feel free to leave a comment! Thanks everyone!

sorry to hear. I never had much luck keeping puffers when I had a tank, and my knowledge was much less than yours. They are a lovely fish. Good luck with the others, I'll be following to see how you do.

Thank you! Losing fish is never fun in the hobby however, the other two puffers are doing quite well. Surprisingly I think I only have two females. I had another puffer even before this and it was a male that also died. I'm not sure but losing two males is odd. There could be something going on with the shipping of the fish.
