Chocolate tasting: Dark Chocolate with Dried Fish

in #fish8 years ago

Today I'm tasting something completely normal in Finland! It's not actually normal in Finland

I had heard that a small chocolate company in Finland is making some special chocolates and their extra super specialty is a chocolate with dried fish in it. They also have chocolate with reindeer meat and some more typical chocolates (like with bilberries), but the fish one is the one which makes to the headlines.

The chocolate brand is called "Taiga" and should be somewhat well available in special stores in Finland.

Wow, that's a real big image to be so blurry. Well I should have focused more, but this should be fine.

Here you can see the fish. The package is 100 g and there is 5 dried fish in it. The fish is something called "European smelt" and in total, 7% of the weight is dried fish. As another special ingredient, the chocolate contains some soy sauce.

The fish is a bit crumbly and when I broke pieces to my family for tasting, my wife asked "Not a piece with the head" and my son said "I want some too, yum!"

In short, the jury conclusion was that the chocolate was really delicious as most of us had assumed the taste being bad. The chocolate was a nice combination of sweet and salty. The fish didn't taste through, lucky enough, but it was giving a nice addition to the chocolate taste.

I was surprised how good combination the fish and chocolate were. I'll buy some more for sure, especially if I know I'll have some tourists coming to Finland looking for special experiences.

If you ever get a chance of tasting chocolate fish or fish chocolate, I recommend you should do it.

Well now that's something I would have never thought up!
Glad it turned out to be a tasty good experience. Would be sad to ruin good chocolate.

Well luckily you are also able to pick off the fish if you dislike it and you can just eat the chocolate :)

A really random but fun article. I've tried chili chocolate but so have most people. There's a brand of crisps in Ireland called Tayto who do a cheese and onion and crisps and chocolate bar, which is actually ok in truth. But yes if I get the chance I'll have a go on this fish chocolate too.

Well we have this real nice fish with crickets in it too :D

I made a post about it a while ago, but I think this was far better than the cricket one.

Anything is good when it's mixed with chocolate.

Crickets? I've seen people eating chocolate bugs before. I'll try anything once but the concept does leave me a little confused.

You're right pretty much anything can be complimented by chocolate in some form, I love good dark chocolate in a chili con carne.

What.. dark chocolate in chili con carne?

I should try that.

The weird thing, I'm surprised by that but think chocolate crickets are normal.

Yea loads of recipes online mate.

Its good that you're surprised, we'd all be bloody bored if we thought the same.

Naurahdin hieman paketin sisäkannelle, lyhyestä virsi kaunis. Kala.

Mitäs sitä enempää lurittelemaankaan. Hyvin kansainväliseksi suunniteltu paketti tosin, voisin kuvitella tuon olevan iso vetonaula hullujen turistien keskuudessa.

what!!! i can't imagine The taste of chocolate mixed with fish taste!!!
i did'nt know it's exist even, it's a new information for me, thank you for sharing this

If you ever fly to Finland, you will have to buy this and taste it then :)

It's a scary combination for most of us Finns too, so I can imagine how it's in different countries!

Is this real?! :D

We don't have Taiga in Serbia, but I'll get a Milka and try eating it with some canned mackerel.

Sounds really exciting! 😊

Oh you should tell how it went ;)

Taiga is a brand of a very small chocolate company, nothing compared to a giant like Milka. I wouldn't even think Milka would be brave enough to try something this special.

I literally opened your post, scrolled through and was like ewww wtf before giving it a read C:

I think sweet and salty is an excellent combination to be honest, and that surprises me to hear that was even soy sauce inside! I actually want to try some now. I'm definitely going to see if I can buy some of their brand online, it would make a great gift <3

Kind of makes me think of a spin on "sea salt" candy. I'm glad that you and your family enjoyed it!

Well even talking about the chocolate to some has caused the "eww wtf"-reaction :D

Sweet and salty usually works. This was a nice combination, I can imagine the soy sauce in the chocolate helps to bring out the nice salty flavor from the fish. Mm'm, yummy!

Hehehe :3

Soy sauce is a staple ingredient in Hawaii, and I prefer using it to salt in cooking most days! Everyone seem to have different tastes. When I start running from sour and spicy, I find comfort in sweet and salty foods.

I don't eat too many sweets... Other than chocolate, so it's always fun to hear about a new flavor/ style! <3

amazing :) is it had a taste of fish as well or not?

Well it had taste of fish, very faint one, but as you can see it's mostly chocolate and a bit of dried fish :D

i want to eat this yummy chocolate.thank you for sharing

I am surprised by this fish choclate.I hope it must be yummmmy :)

Well it was quite nice :)

I need to try this
