Fish Pen (Bungsod), A Natural Way Of Trapping Fish
Hi there especially those who live near a sea shore. How are you today?
I got these pictures when we hope to find fresh fish from local fishermen in barangay Mactan, Lapu-lapu City. This is what we call in our dialect Bungsod or the fish pen. This is one way of trapping fish in a manner that it has a wide opening facing to the strong current of water. Installed in the opening is an elongated fish net with smaller opening at the end that makes fish find it difficult to go back to the open waters but rather stay and just loiter inside the pen. During low tide, it is easier for the owner to harvest those trapped fish.
In fact, the installation of fish pen is highly encouraged by the Bureau Of Fisheries And Aquatic Resources, in cases where smaller fishes are trapped they must be returned to the open sea.
In the province, the sister of my lola lives near the shoreline, so when we do swimming in sometimes we go to a near fish pen owned by my uncle and enjoyed catching trapped fish in shallow water. What a memorable experience it was. The experience made me to take a picture of this fish pen and create this blog today.
Fellow Steemians especially those who are living near the shore, let's help preserve our aquatic natural resources. Do not use chemicals or practice dynamite fishing, surely you have a big catch on that time but it can make nothing to harvest in the future with the destruction.

Thank you for this blog of yours which displays Filipino's ingenuity in surviving the daily lives, and creation of bungsod is one of those strategies which had been passed from generation to generation, such a good thing to hear since it doesn't damage the marine ecosystem.
