Share your any experience of your life, in which you faced the emergency that could be handled by your own only if you know the basic first response skills.

I’ve had some emergency experiences but the one that happened recently that left me in shock but was glad for a timely response from a first responder. It was a fire emergency.

I live in a hostel where we have our separate rooms but we use a general kitchen which is actually very big. In this kitchen there are close to twenty gas cylinders that the different individuals use for their personal cooking.

One of the days I was in the common room close to the kitchen while two other ladies were cooking in the kitchen. One of them had just refilled her gas cylinder and put it on to use it to cook and the cylinder caught fire.

She started shouting and I came into the scene and saw the cylinder on fire. I started panicking alongside with the lady. I started having the most bizzare thoughts on what would happen because there was other gas cylinders in the kitchen filled with gas too.

In my panick I started carrying some cylinders away from the burning one while still confused on what to do. The other lady just stood frozen. I didn’t even remember there was a fire extinguisher near by.

We were still lost in our drama when another lady came and took the fire extinguisher and extinguished the fire. That was when we came back to our senses. Imaging the gas has exploded with all those plenty gas cylinders.

The lady that saved the day started teaching us that in case of fire incident that we shouldn’t panick else we would be in a state of confusion and we should look for the nearest extinguisher and she showed us how to use the extinguisher.

Funny enough I knew how to use the extinguisher but the panick of the moment didn’t allow me think straight. Thank God for the lady.

Imagine you are walking back home, when you witness a road traffic accident between a car and a motorcycle, and the motorcyclist is lying on the road, not moving. There’s some bleeding from his leg, and he appears to be unconscious. You being the first responder, how will you manage this scenario?

To manage this situation, I will apply the DRABC First Response Framework.

  • I will ensure that the accident scene is free from any possible danger of sharp objects or incoming speeding vehicles. There could be possibility of shattered windscreen hence I have to ensure my safety and the victims. Moving to a safe corner would be better.

  • I will proceed to check for response from the victim by tapping him and askiing if he can hear me. While doing this, I would ask for help from the by standers to call for the emergency
Medical help/ambulance. If I don’t get any response from him, then I would have to proceed to the next step.

  • I would check for his airway to ensure it’s clear and if there’s blockage, I would have to open his airway through the lift chin or head tilt method while checking for any possible obstructions.

  • I would proceed to check his breathing whether it’s normal or not. If he’s breathing then I would place him on his side to ensure his airways are open but if he’s not breathing, then I would have to perform a CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) on him.

  • I would process to check his circulation. Seeing there’s a bleeding on his leg, I would apply firm pressure on the wound with a clean cloth and also try to elevate the leg to minimize blood loss.

While awaiting medical intervention. On their arrival, I would intimate them on the procedure that I had carried out on the casualty.

QuestionWhat the Student Did WellAreas for ImprovementGrading
Question 1Provided a vivid account of a fire emergency, illustrating personal panic and the importance of quick thinking. The narrative effectively conveys the urgency of the situation and emphasizes the importance of having first aid knowledge.More detail on specific first aid actions that could have been taken would enhance the response. For example, elaborating on the steps to extinguish a gas fire or actions to take before the arrival of help would provide valuable context. Including reflections on how to better prepare for such emergencies in the future could also improve the response. The real question was what would have you done if you were a first responder at the moment.[Grade: 1.2]
Question 2Clearly outlined the steps of the DRABC protocol and demonstrated a good understanding of scene safety and patient assessment. The sequence of actions was logical and well-structured.You could have mentioned that if there is danger, what would be the alternative. Similarly, if any of the other steps of the DRABC protocol are interfered with, what would be your approach? Mentioning how you would assess the casualty's breathing is also of utmost importance, that is, the rise and fall of the chest. Also, you should mention the explanation of each step, like how you would be clearing the mouth for airway passage.[Grade: 1.7]
Question 3Created a well-designed illustration of the DRABC protocol, effectively demonstrating creativity and understanding of the topic. The flowchart is visually engaging and informative. To improve the effectiveness of the illustration, consider adding a brief description of each step. This would enhance comprehension for viewers unfamiliar with the protocol. A more polished and clean design could have further elevated the overall presentation.[Grade: 2.1]
Question 4Successfully listed emergency service numbers, ensuring a comprehensive selection relevant to the local context in Nigeria. The presentation is clear and organized. The list could be enhanced by including descriptions of each service provided by the numbers listed. Additionally, providing local resources or helplines specific to community needs would add value (e.g., mental health hotlines, national suicide prevention).[Grade: 1.3]
Question 5Completed the quiz accurately, demonstrating a solid grasp of the first aid concepts covered in the lesson.Excellent work overall.[Grade: 2.5]

General Feedback: Your work shows a strong understanding of emergency response protocols and highlights the importance of preparedness in crisis situations. The detailed narratives and creative illustrations enhance your responses, making them engaging and informative. To further improve, focus on providing more specific first aid techniques and refining your illustrations for clarity. Keep up the great work!
