Early Harbinger of Spring (not the plant)

in #finland6 years ago (edited)

A corner of our house

The sun is powerful enough to melt snow on the roof despite daily maximum air temperatures well under freezing. The water has been flowing down during the day but has frozen quickly in the shade. Hence what you are looking at. The snow pusher is frozen to the ground. It's impossible to make it come off without taking a big risk of breaking it. Fortunately, it hasn't been snowing. Maybe I should try to melt the ice from around the edge of the snow pusher using boiling water, and do it sooner than later because the problem is probably becoming worse every day. The previous owners of the house had left it here. But I will never again leave it leaning against the wall at this spot again.

P.S. There exist a herb in North America that goes by the name Harbinger-of-spring (Erigenia bulbosa). It blooms from late February through early April.

Sort:

This is the reason I would not have a glass roof in Finland. We have this kind of "room" and this same problem every single year.

Today is the first to know about Harbininger-spring.It is in early April in the middle of February. But in our country this name is known as Kalabeshakhi.

It should be really irritating....slip everywhere making it unsafe for everyone to move.

That can be solved with some sand or gravel on the walkways and the driveway.

So that if slipped , no chance to live again

A slip might cause one to fall. I'm sure you have fallen many times and not only as a kid. The risk of dying in a fall is there but it's small.

Yup .....i know

Snow is mesmerising
But frozen one is agonizing

You still have snow

It has not even reached its annual maximum, yet. It will depend on the weather in the coming weeks but, on average, the snow maximum is reached at the end of March here in the south of the country and a month later in the far north.

I didn't know that..
We get snow in the Dec,Jan period and very rarely in March..

You're in Kashmir? Pakistan or India?

I've heard about the far north of India and Pakistan having really cold winters. I've seen people post photographs shot there.

I live in Kashmir, India..
It is very cold but mostly in jan, Feb
It gets better in March.
I took this about 2 months ago

We get a lot of snow, but not this year.

What a beautiful landscape! Your winters are different in the sense that your could weather is caused by the high altitude and not high latitude. Your winter days are much longer and sunnier than ours. Your winters must be like our early spring at its best.

Yes it is because of the high altitude.
Yes,it does snow for a day or two and then it's mostly sunny..
You know a lot about this

Well, it's really elementary. And what I meant was the length of day and the altitude of the sun in the sky. Because you're about 30 latitudes to the south of where we are, the sun is 30 degrees higher than here. In the winter, that would make a really massive difference. Here in the south of Finland, the length of day is less than six hours at winter solstice. That means eighteen hours of darkness and only six hours of daylight whereas in Kashmir you probably have something like ten hours of daylight even in the dead of the winter.

Woahh thats quite a bit of ice. It has just covered whole of the pipe and basement there. The best form though to see it is as icicles.

It's a good thing there are very few icicles hanging from the gutter drains.

Hahaha ofcrse otherwise it would strt to smell. And won't be good at all.

I think you did not understand the word "gutter drain". Look it up.

Wow, I hope you don't get any rain.

That was not caused by rain but refrozen snowmelt from the roof.

I understand, but if you get a lot more rain with your gutter drains frozen shut it can cause serious flooding, specially if you already have a leaky foundation/basement.

Well, that's true. But it hasn't rained here for maybe a couple of months. We have a good amount of snow, however. There is no basement in this house. The socle of the house is waterproofed from the outside from its lower edge underground to the upper edge.

As far as I can tell, this is the only gutter drain frozen shut at the moment. The roof is almost completely free of snow on the south side. There shouldn't be much more snowmelt coming from the roof.

Ah, thats good. It sounds like your house is better made to weather the uh, weather than many here in the states. I hardly know anyone who doesn't have flooding issues.

A correction, the waterproofing is a rubber plate extending from the lower edge of the socle to about ground level, not the upper edge. It would be quite ugly that way.

There's also probably a difference in weather patters between the south of Finland and Illinois. Rainfall is quite evenly distributed here. Heavy downpours here are probably not as heavy as in Midwest USA. Of course, you can have serious problems because of the local contours of the terrain here as well. And there is often flooding in river valleys in certain areas with very flat terrain.

There were only a handful of icicles hanging from the gutter drains but there were a couple hanging from the eaves about 10 cm towards the wall from the edge. This means that the gutter drain has flooded near that point. There is a cold storage room above a warm storage room on the side of the house where the overflooding has happened. The attic is quite easily accessible from the cold storage room. I will just have to take one panel off of the wall to have a direct view of the problem. I don't believe there has been much damage but I should install cables for the next winter.

Early Hamburger of spring!
Why I can't see any hamburgers, damn I'm so hungry!!
