'' The Scottish Canaletto '' - David Roberts

Hello Dear Steemit Friends ! My choice for today in the series '' To Honor Old Masters '' is David Roberts (1796-1864) , painter of architectural subjects, prolific both in oil and watercolour, often called '' The Scottish Canaletto ''.

At the age of twenty one , Roberts joined a travelling circus as a scene-painter. With this experience he was engaged to paint scenery for the Edinburgh Pantheon, the Theatre Royal, Glasgow and then for the Theatre Royal, Edinburgh. On the formation of the Society of British Artists in 1823, Roberts became its Vice-President, and President in 1830, gradually abandoning scene-painting for architectural subjects.

Owing to his high position in the world of art Roberts was made one of the Commissioners for the Great Exhibition of 1851. He travelled widely on the Continent, visited Spain, Egypt and the Holy Land, making sketches sufficient to keep him working for ten years. He became one of the best known of the later topographers, and the result of his many journeys exist not only in oil-paintings and watercolours, but in the form of coloured reproductions which were highly popular and brought him a considerable fortune.
