Born in 1853 in Copenhagen, he grew up in the Danish capital in an artistic family - his mother painted, and his cousin, who influenced the boy's career choice, was the director of the Royal Danish Academy.
Carlsen studied architecture at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen for four years, then emigrated to the United States in 1872 and settled in Chicago. He was interested in art and initially worked as an assistant architect and studied with the Danish marine painter Lauritz Holst, whose studio he later took over. Carlsen, who made rapid progress in painting, got a job as a teacher of drawing and painting at the Chicago Academy of Design. In 1875 Carlsen traveled to Paris. After returning to the United States, he founded a studio in New York and began to paint still life in the style of tonalism. The sale of the pictures in New York, however, was difficult and Carlsen moved to Boston. The success of his still lifes at an exhibition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1883 was the first notable event of his career.

In 1884 he returned to Europe and painted flower still lifes for the trader Theron J. Blakeslee. In 1885, two works by Carlsen were exhibited at the Paris Salon.
After returning to New York, he opened a studio on 57th Street, but once again faced Carlsen with the problem of selling his works. And so he moved to San Francisco. In the years 1887-1889 he was director of the California School of Design. He became friends with Arthur Mathews, who also taught at this school and was a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement. Then Carlsen taught in the San Francisco Art Students League, where he worked until 1891. He influenced the work of many students, including Guy Rose, a Californian artist who became a leading impressionist of the Giverny Group.
Carlsen moved back to the east of the US, and began his career as a teacher at the National Academy of Design, the League of Art Students, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
Since 1912 he has held several solo exhibitions at the New York Macbeth Gallery. He received the award from Samuel T. Shaw of the National Academy of Design, where he taught from 1905 to 1909. After moving from New York to Philadelphia, he taught for many years at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
Died January 2, 1932 in New York.
