Giorgione - one of the most mysterious figures in the European art

Hello Dear Steemit Friends ! My choice for today in the series “To honor Old Masters” is Giorgione ( Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco ), Italian painter born in 1476. Almost nothing is known of his life and only a handful of paintings can be confidently attributed to him, but he holds a significant place in the history of art.

Giorgione achieved almost legendary status soon after his early death from plague, and ever since he has captured the imagination in a way that few other artists can match. His fame is explained by the fact that he initiated a new conception of painting. Giorgione was one of the earliest artists to specialize in small pictures for private collectors rather than public works for civic or ecclesiastical patrons, and he was the first painter who subordinated subject-matter to the evocation of mood. Even well-informed contemporaries sometimes didn't know what was represented in his pictures, and they have continued to pose intriguing puzzles for modern scholars.

Giorgione was probably a pupil of Giovanni Bellini and he developed his soft and mellow style in the direction of a dreamy romanticism, which in turn cast a spell over many contemporaries, including Titian, who after Giorgione's death completed some pictures he had left unfinished. In the generation after his death Giorgione's work was widely imitated, an additional source of confusion for scholars.
