Hello Dear Steemit Friends ! Today I would like to present you Frank Holl, born 1845, a painter of portrait and genre. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools where in 1863 he won a Gold Medal. He scored his first success with “The Lord Gave and the Lord hath Taken Away”. For this he was awarded the Travelling Prize, which he spent in Italy. In 1870 “No tidings from the Sea” was bought by Queen Victoria.

In genre painting, Holl's preference was for dramatic social realism. Most of his illustrations for “The Graphic” were scenes of working class life. In 1877 Holl began to paint portraits, launching himself on a career which made him one of the most popular, and one of the best of all Victorian painters.
