Constantin Ernest Adolphe Guys was born in 1805. He was a self-taught draughtsman and watercolourist, the most perceptive chronicler of French daily life under the Second Empire.
Guys left home at eighteen to fight in the Greek war of independence, took up drawing in the 1860s and represented the “Illustrated London News” in the Crimea.

In the 1860s Guys settled in Paris, where his scenes of cafe- and night-life provided inspiration for Forain and Toulouse-Lautrec. Carefully avoiding fame, he did not sign his drawings, and died penniless. He is represented in the print rooms of the most important museums and notably in the Carnavalet, Paris.
