Clash of the Titans (2010): Supremely disappointing

in #films5 years ago

I have to admit that i am biased because I was such a fan of the 1981 original which was just breathtaking considering the time-period. However, I would imagine that like many of the films made back then it would probably be wise to leave it in your memory and no go back to confirm it and subsequently be let down.

Anyway, this isn't about that. This is about the remake

With a star-studded cast such as LIam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, and starring Sam Worthington combined with some fantastic source material combined with the CGI technology that exists today it seemed as though this almost had to be a winner. Sadly, that was not the case.

I normally really enjoy films that have elements of mythology in them but in lieu of any sort of character development Clash just kind of went for full on action right out of the gate. They do this in such great quantities that at times it is difficult to keep up with what the hell is going on.

One of the main things that irritated me about this movie is the silly dialogue. The original was dark and fun and this one had an opportunity to improve upon that using today's technology but they failed miserably. Even Liam Neeson couldn't salvage this thing with his weak portrayal as Zeus.

I actually feel a little bit bad for Sam Worthington as I feel he is a good actor that just ends up getting type cast in big productions that have little substance to them. Some would argue that Avatar was an exception but to be honest I don't even have an opinion about that movie and that is not what this is about. What could he do to change this? Does he even want to? I am sure his paychecks are through the roof and his net worth of $26 million probably helps him sleep at night. I know it would work wonders for me.

Although I did not see this movie in theaters I was thinking that it "would probably be better in 3-D", but according to critics who watched it in 3-D, it was a mess.

The biggest problem I had with the movie was how they truly went over the top with the Medusa battle, which was one of the highlights of the original. I mean it was just nuts with a multi-platform battle that was likely meant to be exciting but for me was just an eye-rolling bonanza.

Overall, I am willing to admit that someone who was not at all familiar with the original and how much of an impact it had on the 80's would likely enjoy this film much more than I did. Remakes are always a problem for me because of the nostalgia that I have for the originals and I am almost never impressed because of this fact. The campy dialogue and the fact that the entire movie is a CGI bonanza with very little room left for actual acting kind of made this film a dud for me. Most of the professional and amateur critic world agrees with this notion, but since I am willing to admit that my history with the 1981 film has an impact on my opinion, i will give them a few points to counteract my bias. The movie did make hundreds of millions of dollars so yet again, we can expect films of this caliber to continue to flow from Hollywood.

On a scale of "urgh!" to "Wowsers!" I give Clash of the Titans 2010 a score of.....

"just above "Skipsies"

watched it on a flight. Was expecting shit and was still disapointed

i love this response.

Nop! These new films with CGI don’t impress me! Those fast actions really give me a headache as my eyes couldn’t focus that fast! The sound of fighting is often too loud that I couldn’t hear the dialogue! No fun at all!
I prefer those old Sherlock Holmes films and slow sci-fi movies with dense story plots! Wanna exercise my brain rather than my eyes!

Cheers.

I watch the ful trailor of this movie. It is very interesting. I love this tyoe of movie. Acting of this guy is very impressive. Now a days battle movies and also games become more popular in the world. Very unique name of this movie. Thanks for sharing this movie. @gooddream.

I have never watched this film. But with the reviews of the film from you I be interested in watching it.

Yep! Feel the same! Love the original... I didn't mind this one, but I also saw in 3D and felt that I just couldn't properly see anything. My eyes were spinning and I could just about focus, it was hard to actually see what was going on or anything. However, I do find that about 3D films, my eyes / processer just can't seem to properly keep up with the imaging. I prefer standard 2D as I can actually see haha.

Side note - I went to an IMAX to watch free solo (climbing documentary) and dude that blew me away!

I remember that back in the 80's there was a movie called Ice Pirates that they would play on Fox network in the middle of the day on Saturday. It was one of my favorite movies. I haven't watched it since and like you said, I would probably be pretty disappointed if I did. I think I caught bits of this one here and there, but never took the time to watch it all the way through. Now I know better :)
