Film Photography Contest - My Thoughts on Analog Photography and Cameras

I grew up being photographed... a lot

Original Image

I have a lot of fond memories of film camera photography. Growing up, my mom would have a constant cycle of film purchasing and developing. She would put together photo albums for every month and fill them with analog photos, 24 photos at a time.

Film Camera - Canon Photura

I don't know much about the cameras that she used over the years, but the one that stands out in my mind, which she used for many years is the Canon Photura.

It was so cool looking.

The cap would pop open and reveal the flash. People always thought it was a hand held camcorder, but of course it's an film camera.

My mom used this camera all the time. I remember the entire back opening up to reveal the battery compartment (it was rechargeable) and film loading area.

No preview LCD screen, just a little viewfinder. It had an odd feature - a viewfinder that opened from the top so you could see looking down. And a distinctive and authentic sound as it took the photo.

She bought the camera sometime in the 90's and continued using it until 2007 - long after digital became popular. She was pretty resistant to the digital camera phenomenon until she went 100% digital in 2008.

If I were to get into film photography, this is the camera I would use.

I would probably invest in a Nikon FM-10 since it's affordable for a beginner (around $500) and fairly simple to use. It's Single Lens Reflex, mostly point and shoot. Very popular with people new to photography, like me.

  • Includes 35-70mm f/3.5-4.8 Zoom Nikkor lens
  • Operable without batteries
  • Wide shutter speed range (up to 1/2000 second)
  • Fixed pentaprism viewfinder (eye-level)
  • Depth-of-field preview
  • Center-weighted photo-diode light meter
  • Manual advance and rewind
  • Dimensions: 139 x 86 x 53 mm; Weight: 420g

I'm still digital for now.

I'm not a photographer by any means, so sadly I don't have any analog photography to show. But here is a digital photo I took.

The first shot looked a lot like my parents house. My dad loved taking pictures on all the vacations we went on. I believe there is still boxes and boxes of slides still around too! That Nikon camera looks familiar, I think he might have had something similar to it!

A lot of fond memories of my mom holding that camera! She has 1000's of photos of us growing up, we are very well documented as children. @ironshield

ya know what? I didn't even know they still made film cameras!

It would be fun to get into film photography. It's a surprisingly expensive hobby. @ironshield

really? the cameras or the film costs alot because now it's a specialty right? why would it be fun, wouldn't it be a hassle to fool with the film?
or is it about the process?
